Who could have known in 2016 how much we’d need this story in 2022? We’ve had a dizzying few years and our team is thrilled to get our hands on this story in today’s world.
“All are welcome here.”Īt the heart of this amalgamation of dozens of artists’ words, works, and daydreams is a story about community. Regardless of your history with the little yellow guy, the story of The Spongebob Musical is for everyone. We are just as thrilled to share this story with folks who’ve never sat through an episode of Spongebob Squarepants, even those who perhaps found the original cartoon a bit grating. It’s a come-as-you-are, young-and-old, inclusive party. But The Spongebob Musical isn’t some exclusive fan-event. We’ve specifically worked to hide some additional Easter eggs for the diehard fans out there. Is this a loving homage to our favorite geometric optimist? Of course. I believed I was the perfect candidate for this musical…īut after spending the summer working on our own production of The Spongebob Musical, I believe I was mistaken. I literally dreamed about Spongebob for the week leading up to it. So, when the musical premiered in Chicago in 2016, I was elated to score an invite to its opening night. I was the proud owner of the original Video Now, which means I had Band Geeks committed to memory in its entirety. I knew all the words to “Ripped Pants” and “Striped Sweater”. I celebrated Opposite Day and Free Balloon Day. I spent my elementary school days with a notebook full of ideas for a Spongebob themed amusement park my friend and I were developing over recess. I’m a product of the Spongebob generation.
